Today In 1865: Civil War Document Changed A Nation

Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant after the final battle at the Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, ending the American Civil War. Lee signed an official document on April 10, 1865, a day after his surrender. The document now resides at the Civil War and Underground Railroad Museum in Philadelphia.
