NBA Forward Cleanthony Early Shot In Robbery

This is the second time that a Knicks player has been robbed in two weeks.

New York Knicks small forward Cleanthony Early was robbed and shot in the knee near a strip club in Queens early Wednesday.

Early was in an Uber car when up to six people in ski masks approached him. The assailants shot Early in the right knee and fled the scene with his personal items, which included gold caps and a gold necklace, the New York Daily News reports.

The shooting happened around 4:15 a.m. outside the CityScapes Gentlemen's Club in Maspeth, Queens.

The 24-year-old player was several blocks from the club in the Uber car when suspects in at least one vehicle cut him off and surrounded him, detectives told New York's WPIX News.

Police have made no arrests in the case.

New York City police said Early was taken to the hospital in stable condition Wednesday morning. Police would not confirm Early's name, but the New York Knicks released a statement several hours after the shooting.

"We are aware of what occurred with Cleanthony Early this morning and we are relieved that he is not in a life-threatening situation," the statement read. "We will not comment any further until we have more information."

Knicks forward Kristaps Porzingis tweeted "prayers" for Early, who reportedly underwent surgery for his injury.

Teammate Carmelo Anthony made a plea for gun control during a Wednesday afternoon press conference and say "we have to do something."

Anthony is an outspoken advocate of gun control and was among the NBA players featured in a recent PSA calling for an end to gun violence.

"We all are targets, at the end of the day, regardless of how much love people show you," Anthony said, according to Fox Sports "We need to do a better job of putting ourselves in a safer environment!"

A similar situation occurred less than two weeks ago, when more than $600,000 in jewelry was taken from teammate Derrick Williams’ New York apartment early on Dec. 19, the Daily News notes.

This entry has been updated with information from NYPD and statements from the Knicks and players.
