Today, the Earth got a little hotter, and a little more crowded.

And the chances of Donald Trump’s family and fortune surviving climate change are small, dwindling daily and irreversibly – as are ours.

Saving BUB, Beautiful Unique Biodiversity, as in this slug moth caterpillar in Thailand, is another reason to preserve carbon storing forests.

Forests: the cheapest way to store carbon

OO As Thailand Ramps Up Its Palm Oil Sector, Peat Forests Feel The Pressure

  • · In Thailand, the world's third-largest producer of palm oil, about 70 % of oil palm land is held by small-scale farmers.
  • · The government is trying to reclaim land from palm oil encroachers in the Pru Kaching peat swamp forest protected area, but it’s difficult.
  • · In order to grow crops like oil palm in peatlands, the swampy peat must be drained – which releases carbon into the atmosphere and makes the forests that overlay them more susceptible to fire.

When we harm forests, we harm ourselves.

By executive orders and legislation, Trump and the GOP are promoting policies that will increase the number of US babies dying from their effects – most notably, from asthma. How?

  • · By promoting fossil fuel burning, and removing and preventing pollution regulations,
  • · These policies will result in increased US air pollution,
  • · Of the type shown to damage lungs, increase asthma, and worsen existing asthma;

  • · CDC data show that 51 babies, including pre-schoolers, died of asthma in 2010,
  • · And in 2007, CDC stated that US asthma was increasing.
  • · Increased US air pollution increases asthma morbidity among children.

Increasing US air pollution will increase, not prevent, the deaths of US babies.

Thus, Trump policies will continue and increase the killing of US babies.

OO Trump's Coal Revival Will Make It Harder To Breathe and certainly harm public health.

OO Trump's Executive Order: More Fossil Fuels, Regardless Of Climate Change

The primary aim is to:

  • unleash fossil fuel, especially coal development, by
  • undoing policies that curb pollution from power plants.

Trump boasted, "We're going to have clean coal, really clean coal," totally without evidence, for there is no demonstration that “clean coal” is economically feasible:

OO Republicans Try To Eviscerate EPA: Sneaky Plan Smothers Future Environmental Regulations

  • · The recently passed GOP House bill
  • · Honest and Open New EPA Science Treatment (HONEST) Act [MEH: I’m not making this up]
  • · is a pernicious attempt to prevent the Environmental Protection Agency from creating rules
  • · to protect the environment and public health:

  • · How? By insisting EPA only use scientific studies for which ALL data is publicly available and results are easily reproducible.
  • · The problem? Many public health studies use private medical data, while others contain trade secrets and industry data.
  • · And public health studies are often impossible to reproduce – as when based on past events, for ex.
  • · "Almost everything that has been done in the last 10, 11, 12 years would not pass the standards."
  • · independent EPA studies would be hobbled, too.

This will effectively stall regulations for decades.

Welcome to the GOP-Trump World of Suicidal Stupidity.

@@ Species On The Move: impacts on ecosystems and human well-being.

OO The Big Picture: How Climate Change Will Change Life On Earth, And Us - As the global climate changes, human well-being, ecosystem function, and even climate itself are increasingly affected by the shifting geography of life. Takeaways:

  • · the rate at which moveable species are moving is speeding up with climate change.
  • · MEH: but even this does not guarantee long term survival
  • · species respond differently and at different rates, causing disruptions in the web of life.
  • · Disruptions can change entire ecosystems, and impact human communities.
  • · Changes in the distributions of species affect:
  • · production of natural resources required for food security,
  • · patterns of disease transmission,
  • · climate-changing carbon storage processes.

MEH: Some places will get too hot to grow important cereal crops, for ex.

More takeaways:

  • · some range shifts even create feedbacks on climate, speeding up climate change.
  • · human policies need to recognize and incorporate this information.

says a major new analysis.

Extinct from Climate Change and possibly other factors, the famed golden toad of Central America is one of many amphibians that have disappeared worldwide. Wikipedia

OO Could Global Warming Cause Extinction Of Plants And Animals? Yes - Takeaways:

  • · All plants and animals have temperature ranges beyond which they cannot survive;
  • · Some species can move, but that has limits – island edges, mountaintops, etc.
  • · Many species depend on others: when coral reefs die, so do many other dependent species.
  • · Climate change is evolving too fast for many (MEH if not most) species to adapt.

Aliens Threaten A US Native – dandelions came from Eurasia but are now all over the US, even in wilderness, threatening American native plants, like this native larkspur. Thousands of different alien plants threaten our native ones, and cost us billions to eradicate. Ask the plant pesticide industry.

MEH: climate change is just one of several extinction stresses on species worldwide, as in:

  • Loss of habitat
  • Harmful alien species
  • Pollution
  • Human hunting

Often extinction is a 1-2 punch:

it starts with a major die-off from one effect, such as climate change;

the last, weakened and stressed population is killed off by another effect, like an epidemic.

OO A New Era Dawns – And It Won't Be Human-Friendly - Human mistreatment of the planet is ushering in another era and it is not going to be pleasant, says a new book. Takeaways:

OO Climate Change-Fueled Jet Stream Linked To Brutal Floods And Heatwaves says study.

A slowdown in planetary winds triggered recent episodes of extreme weather by stalling weather systems.

OO Extreme Weather Linked To Climate Change Impact On The Jet Stream a polar band of wind. Takeaways:

  • · The jet stream is driven by the temperature difference between the Arctic and warmer zones below;
  • · This difference decreases as the Arctic heats much faster than those zones.
  • · This slows the jet stream, causing it to meander, looping deep into warmer zones.
  • · The meandering brings frigid cold into the southern US, and sends heat into Alaska.

  • · But slower winds also create more stationary patterns,
  • · Increasing weather pattern stalls over areas:
  • · If it’s rain, this leads to flooding;
  • · If it’s hot, sunny weather, this can become heatwaves and droughts.

Daily Climate Change: Global Map of Unusual Temperatures, Oct 12, 2014

How unusual has the weather been? No one event is “caused” by climate change, but global warming, which is predicted to increase unusual, extreme weather, is having a daily effect on weather, worldwide.

Unusually heavy rains have released California from a SURFACE water drought, but significantly depleted California aquifers keep 60+% of the state in a GROUNDWATER drought, which will likely take decades to disappear. It also means this major US agricultural region has a small safety net, when the next dry year strikes.

Practically ALL of the US is experiencing unusually warm temperatures, as well as its surrounding waters.

Much of the areas surrounding the North Pole are experiencing much warmer than normal temperatures – not good news for our Arctic thermal shield of ice. Hotter than usual temperatures continue to dominate human habitats.

There is, of course, much more news on the consequences and solutions to climate change. To get it, check out this annotated resource list I’ve compiled, “Climate Change News Resources,” at here. For more information on the science of climate change, its consequences and solutions you can view my annotated list of online information resources here.

Every day is Earth Day, folks, as I was reminded by this wild flower I photographed one spring. Making the U.S. a global clean energy leader will ensure a heck of a lot more jobs, and a clean, safe future. If you'd like to join the increasing numbers of people who want to TELL Congress that they will vote for clean energy candidates you can do so here. It's our way of letting Congress know there's a strong clean energy voting bloc out there.
