OO Hunting, Not Deforestation, Biggest Threat To Southeast Asian Biodiversity shows a new study. Forest animals are vital to the health of forests. Takeaways:

  • animal populations have declined sharply at multiple sites across Southeast Asia since 1980, with many species now completely wiped out in substantial portions of their former ranges.
  • Besides improved enforcement of hunting restrictions on protected areas and species,
  • efforts to engage hunters in sustainable hunting practices are urgently needed.
  • the region will likely lose most of its iconic species, and many others besides, within the next few years.
  • Hunting is pushing many species close to extinction.
When we harm forests, we harm ourselves.

OO How Earth Will Pay Back Our Carbon Emissions With ...
More Carbon Emissions,
Beyond Our Control

if we don't control it now. Takeaways:

  • Many natural feedback cycles amplify carbon emissions,
  • and will likely become self-generating, without human help.
  • Examples include:
  1. Indonesian peat wildfires can release massive climate changing emissions, fueling more fire;
  2. Melting Arctic ice increases heat absorption there, further speeding global warming (albedo effect);
  3. Warming drying ecosystems (like California) burn more, emitting more climate changing emissions.

In all these cases, the carbon that can fuel massive further climate change is locked into the soil, peat and forests of ecosystems that span the tropics to the poles.

Like lighting a fuse, if we allow enough emissions to heat our planet enough, these natural cycles will start generating themselves - and we will be facing uncontrollable global warming and climate change.

  • Commitment of nations to a climate changing emissions limit in aviation.

Daily Climate Change: Global Map of Unusual Temperatures, Oct 18, 2016

How unusual has the weather been? No one event is "caused" by climate change, but global warming, which is predicted to increase unusual, extreme weather, is having a daily effect on weather, worldwide.

Looking above at recent temperature anomalies, much of the US and the waters surrounding it are experiencing warmer than normal temperatures: the eastern Pacific warm spot continues and so does the drought in California, despite recent rains.

Much of the areas surrounding the North Pole are experiencing much warmer than normal temperatures - not good news for our Arctic thermal shield of ice. Hotter than usual temperatures continue to dominate human habitats.

There is, of course, much more news on the consequences and solutions to climate change. To get it, check out this annotated resource list I've compiled, "Climate Change News Resources," at here.
