CNN To Air Special Report On Gun Background Checks

CNN is taking a stand on gun control with a two-day special report on background checks, starting Tuesday.

"Guns Under Fire" will kick off with Dana Bash's interview with Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly on Tuesday's "Anderson Cooper 360" at 8 p.m. EST. Piers Morgan and Wolf Blitzer will also take the issue on on their own programs, examining how background checks could potentially reduce gun violence.

On Wednesday, other CNN anchors and correspondents will have special reports looking at the public support for background checks, the role politics will play in passing checks, and whether they would have prevented recent shooting tragedies.

"According to the latest polls, 9 out of 10 Americans support tougher background checks, so how is it that Congress can do nothing?" the network said in a statement.

The Senate is expected to vote Thursday on a gun reform package — which would expand background checks — put forward by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Senators Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Pat Toomey, R-Pa. have been working together on a measure that would expand background checks on firearm sales to include gun shows and online transactions.
