CNN Latino will be "an eight-hour programming block featuring news, documentaries, talk shows and lifestyle programming," according to the paper. It will debut in Los Angeles in January, and later expand to television stations in other cities.
"We are trying to appeal to bilingual Latinos in the U.S., those who feel 100% American and 100% Latino," Cynthia Hudson-Fernández, general manager of CNN en Español and Hispanic strategy for CNN, told the Times. "This is an alternative to existing networks. We feel that there is a huge opportunity for this type of programming."
CNN is the latest media organization to try to tap into the country's growing market of Latino viewers. Earlier this year, ABC News and Univision announced a joint venture — an English-language network that will cater to Latinos — set to launch in January as well.
