Espresso for your baby? While the thought might raise eyebrows for some concerned parents, as usual Brooklyn residents are pushing to be at the forefront of burgeoning parenting trends.
That's right, cutting edge mommies and daddies of Brooklyn are apparently ordering "babyccinos" for their youngsters, some children as young as 2-years old.
The off-menu beverage for parents in-the-know goes for about $2 and is described as a "macchiato-like beverage featuring a shot of decaf espresso topped with steamed milk and froth" with many cafes serving the drink with a bit of cinnamon for the kiddies to enjoy.
Brooklyn Paper talked to some caffeine-loving parents about the trend with one father exclaiming, "Our children love babyccinos!" while another mother implied it was only natural to serve her son coffee since his first words were "coffee shop."
But as hip as Brooklyn is, Brooklyn Paper points out that the origins of the babycinno actually started in Australia about a decade before Brooklyn parents caught wind of the trend.
One Australian barista lamented the popularity of the beverage and said, "They interrupt workflow, create milk wastage and can be served at a dangerous temperature to a vulnerable consumer. Babyccinos have become so popular in Australia it would be difficult to find a cafe that doesn’t have them on their menu."
Regardless, Brooklyn parents can add their babyccino orders to the eye-rolling phrases of "Shit Park Slope Parents Say." No wonder Southpaw decided to pack their bags.
