People at a growing number of U.S. colleges are voicing their support for Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump in ways that seem to be rooted in prejudice and bigotry.
While not all expressions of support for Trump have undertones of hostility, there have been multiple instances of public graffiti -- bearing messages like "Build The Wall" or "Deport them all" -- that strike an unmistakably nativist note.
At the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, the slogan of choice was "WE WANT THE WALL." At the University of Oregon, Trump supporters chalked "U of O ♥ The Wall."
These incidents are being referred to as "The Chalkening" on Twitter.
Here's a breakdown of some of the most inflammatory declarations seen nationwide:
University of Michigan
Unknown parties at the Ann Arbor campus chalked statements last month including “Stop Islam,” “Trump 2016” and “Build the Wall," The Michigan Daily reported.
Other students subsequently called the police and proceeded to wash off the chalk.
“Attacks directed toward any individual or group within our community, based on a belief or characteristic, are inconsistent with the university’s values of respect, civility and equality," university President Mark Schlissel said in a statement. “These are core values and guiding principles that will help us as we strive to live up to our highest ideals.”
Many were disappointed but unsurprised. “This is so reflective of our student campus and the depths of racism and the things that students of color have to endure and that the administration is continuously silent on,” student Banen Al-Sheemary told the Daily.
Ohio University
Fraternity and sorority members chalked "Trump 2016" and "Build The Wall!!" last week on a campus graffiti wall, student newspaper The Post reported.
A group of students responded by painting over the slogan with a message saying "Build Bridges Not Walls."
"This phrase is offensive and hurtful to many individuals as it is directly tied to the Hispanic/Latino/a community, makes them feel marginalized, and the message was interpreted that they do not belong at Ohio University," said a letter sent by student-led Greek organizations on campus.
“I felt disgust, frustration and I expected more from this campus,” student Joshelyn Smith told The Post.
The school's Greek-life organizations canceled several events, Cleveland.com reported, in order to refocus the conversation around "fraternal values."
DePaul University
The DePaul College Republicans posted photos on Facebook of a number of chalked messages last week, including "Trump Train 2016," "Blue Lives Matter" and "Make DePaul Great Again," as well as a message that appeared to read "Wall, Build It!" The school's Black Student Union declared the incident a hate crime, according to Fox News.
When the messages were washed away, some students at the Chicago school complained that they were being deprived of their right to free speech.
University of California, San Diego
A busy part of campus was overtaken with slogans including “Make America great again,” “Build the wall,” “Deport them all,” “Fuck Mexicans” and “Mexico will pay,” USA Today reported this week.
“As Latinos to be surrounded by an environment where we’re told we don’t belong here makes it hard to get an education,” UCSD senior Christina Munoz told USA Today. “They did this in a place where it was noticeable, where underrepresented students would see it.”
“Unfortunately, late Friday evening graffiti promoting the deportation of undocumented immigrants and the construction of a wall on the border of Mexico was discovered chalked on UC San Diego’s campus sidewalks," the school said in a statement. "This graffiti runs counter to our campus values of equity and inclusion.”

CORRECTION: A previous version of this article said that a "Chalkening" incident had taken place at Alfred University in New York. A representative for the school tells HuffPost that no such incident took place there.
