A young man playing “Pokemon Go” in a busy San Francisco park was shot to death Saturday night. Calvin Riley, a college baseball player, was killed around 10 p.m. in Aquatic Park, Sgt. Robert Jansing, a detective with the U.S. Park Police, said Sunday.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
“There doesn’t appear to be any outstanding motive right now,” he added, but he said the park was busy and there’s a strong chance someone may have witnessed the incident.
“From what we know there was no confrontation,” family friend John Kirby told KGO-TV. “There was nothing said back and forth. It was just senseless, just came up and shot in the back and ran away for nothing.”
Riley and his friend were part of a group playing when they noticed someone watching them, Kirby added. “Then when the friend came around a corner he heard a gunshot, saw his friend fall, and whoever did it ran away and possibly got into a car.”
Riley attended San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, California, where he studied kinesiology and played on the baseball team, according to the school’s website.
He was someone “everybody loved to be around,” his coach, Reed Peters, told the Stockton Record.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist Riley’s family. As of Monday morning, it had already raised more than $35,000.
The popular game has been linked to other bizarre crimes. Last month, for example, a man in Florida shot at two teenagers who were playing outside his house after mistaking them for burglars.
