Comedian Makes Hilarious Observation About The Way We Praise Dads

“Guess who else has to go to those doctor's appointments?"

With a bit of comedy, Ali Wong addressed a serious flaw in the way we treat moms and dads.

During her “Baby Cobra” special she filmed for Netflix (when she was more than seven months pregnant), the comedian cracked some jokes about being pregnant and preparing for a new baby. In one part of her special, she told the audience she had already noticed a “crazy double standard” surrounding moms and dads.

“It takes so little to be considered a great dad, and it also takes so little to be considered a shitty mom,” she said. “People praise my husband for coming to all of my doctor’s appointments with me.”

With one funny quip, Wong summed up how ridiculous this double standard is.

“Guess who else has to go to those doctor’s appointments? Me!” she said. “I’m the star of the show. There’s nothing for the camera to see if I’m not there, but he’s the hero for playing Candy Crush while I get my blood drawn.”

Since shooting her special, Wong has welcomed a daughter. In a recent interview with NPR, she talked about what it’s like having a child at home and experiencing the parenting double standard she mentioned before within the comedy world.

“Even now when I go out people are like, ‘What are you doing here? Didn’t you just have a baby?’” she said. “But people never ask a male comic when he’s out a week later, like, ‘Oh my god, you’re so irresponsible! What are you doing out?’”

This gap in parenting is no laughing matter, but Wong and her sense of humor pretty much nailed it.
