Coming Out As Transgender At The Office Is More Difficult Than Saying You're Gay: Beck Bailey

Why Coming Out As Transgender At The Office Is More Difficult Than Announcing You're Gay

Transgender rights advocate Beck Bailey spoke at length about the unique challenges facing the community in the workplace in a HuffPost Live interview this week.

Bailey acknowledged the "slight difference" between coming out as transgender vs. coming out as gay in a professional setting.

"I think there is a slight difference there," he said, before adding, "Few people report knowing someone who is transgender."

He then noted, "I think part of the barrage of questions, however well-meaning they are, are just based on the fact that folks don't know trans people. Sometimes those questions are inappropriate and a little too personal, particularly in certain contexts like the workplace."

"Part of my job as a transgender activist is to put myself out there ... but also kind of maintain some boundaries. It's a fine line to run," he said.
