Only 12 entertainers in history have nabbed the ever-elusive EGOT, the acronym reserved for those who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. While Taylor Swift made headlines last week for getting one step closer to achieving the honor, there's another artist who's set his sights on the EGOT.
In an interview with HuffPost Live on Monday, Common revealed he's looking to join the likes of Mel Brooks, Whoopi Goldberg and Audrey Hepburn in the elite EGOT club.
"I'm very much looking forward to doing theater," Common told host Josh Zepps. "I am going for it. I'll let you know. I'm not shy about it. I'll go for that EGOT."
Common received a Grammy in 2002 for "Love of My Life" with Erykah Badu, and he followed up with another Grammy four years later for "Southside" which featured a Kanye West verse. Earlier this year, Common and John Legend took home an Academy Award for "Glory" -- meaning the rapper needs just two more awards to complete the set.
Common, whose new film "Being Charlie" is making its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, expressed his passion for the art of theater and explained how he was bitten by the acting bug.
"It was a conscious choice to pursue acting because I always loved film and theater," he said. "Once I participated in my first acting class, that's when I was like, 'Okay I really want to do this. I feel this in my spirit, like in my heart and soul.'"
The Chicago-bred artist said his interest in acting has broadened his horizons and has also influenced his raps.
"Being in acting classes and being on the set has opened me up as an artist so much more," he said. "I feel a lot more free as an artist. I feel I can do anything on stage. Now when I perform, I like putting theatrics to my live performances. And also in writing, now I deal with the backstories of characters when I write."
