An 18-year-old Subway employee is facing a felony charge after he allegedly poisoned a police sergeant’s drink with methamphetamine and THC, the chemical found in marijuana.
The uniformed law enforcement officer had just picked up lunch from the drive-thru of a franchise of the sandwich shop in Layton, Utah, Monday when he took a sip from his beverage and tasted something funny, KSTU reported.
The sergeant said he struggled to hit his police cruiser’s brake when he approached a red light.
He managed to safely get back to the station and was taken to a hospital from there. His drink later tested positive for the drugs, authorities said.
Surveillance video at the restaurant later allegedly showed employee Tanis Lloyd Ukena appearing to add something to the sergeant’s drink before handing it to him through the restaurant’s window, the Salt Lake City Tribune reported, citing a probable cause statement.
Police arrested Ukena and booked him into the Davis County Jail on suspicion of Surreptitious Administering of Poisonous Substance, which is a felony offense. Bail was set at $10,000.
The unidentified officer has since been released from the hospital and is said to be “feeling better,” according to a statement posted to the Layton City Police Department’s Facebook page Tuesday.
Ukena denies the allegations against him. It’s not clear whether there’s any speculated motive at this time, the Tribune reported.
