From fireflies to fast cars, humans are drawn to bright shiny things — a fascination the Field Museum has capitalized on in its latest exhibit which opened Thursday.
The museum's "Creatures Of Light" exhibit highlights nature's flashiest creatures — everything from insects to mushrooms and alien-like fish — that produce their own light.

Developed in conjunction with the American Museum of Natural History in New York and the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa, the Field Museum experience re-creates the environments of the bioluminescent creatures, including a North American woodland, New Zealand cave and the Caribbean Sea.
In an effort to modernize the museum experience — Crain's Chicago Business reported two years ago museum attendance was down by nearly 1 million — curators have added more tech-friendly features, including a companion iPad app museum-goers can download for free.
"Creatures Of Light" starts up following the well-received Maharaja exhibit which wrapped in February.
"Creatures of Light: Nature's Bioluminescence" is at the Field Museum March 7 through Sept 8. Tickets to the exhibit are included in Discovery and All-Access passes to the museum, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day.
