The Chicago Transit Authority on Tuesday unveiled a new budget that, while not increasing single-ride fares, will drastically increase multi-day fares and add a new surcharge for commuters departing from O'Hare International Airport.
While single fares will stay put at $2.25 for train or bus rides, the Chicago Sun-Times reports that one-day prices will increase from $5.75 to $10, three-day passes from $14 to $20, weekly passes from $23 to $28 and 30-day passes from $86 to $100.
The agency is also taking on a new $2.75 surcharge for commuters departing on the Blue Line from O'Hare and using single-ride tickets, according to the Chicago Tribune. The charge will not apply to individuals with monthly passes or Chicago Cards set to monthly passes.
The pass hikes were announced one day following CTA signing a tentative four-year labor deal with Amalgamated Transit Union, its biggest union, an agreement some speculated would stave off some fare increases. The stalemate had delayed the agency's release of its 2013 budget until Tuesday.
The CTA's 2012 operating budget faced a $277 million deficit and the agency last increased fares in 2009.
