Clinging to a 4-1 lead over the Giants in the top of the sixth inning, the Cubs not only started giving out free passes to first base, but they started allowing baserunners to advance without the ball being put in play at a record pace. Starting pitcher Edwin Jackson and reliever Michael Bowden combined to throw five wild pitches in the sixth, setting a new regular-season Major League record for most in a single inning, via ESPN Stats and Info.
Five wild pitches had been thrown in a single inning before, in a postseason game, when then-Cardinals pitcher Rick Ankiel threw all five in Game 1 of the 2000 NLDS, per CSNChicago.com.
Along with the five wild pitches, the Giants drew four walks and ended up scoring four runs in the inning to take a 5-4 lead. The game went into extra innings where Cubs reliever Shawn Camp allowed what would be the game-winning run to score with a balk in the top of the 10th. The Giants went on to win 10-7.
Since a goat's head was sent to Wrigley Field for team chairman Tom Ricketts last week, the Cubs have set a record for most wild pitches in one inning, they lost three out of their last four (all to San Francisco) and a top prospect was suspended due to his role in a brawl.
