Daily Meditation: The Journey Of Lent

We all need help maintaining our personal spiritual practice. We hope that these Daily Meditations, prayers and mindful awareness exercises can be part of bringing spirituality alive in your life.

Today's meditation features a poem by the late religion writer Phyllis Tickle, included in her Hungry Spring & Ordinary Song: Collected Poems. "Lent in Lucy" is a reflection on the Christian period of fasting between Ash Wednesday and Easter.

Lent In Lucy by Phyllis Tickle

We must think now,

In this time of winter.

We must stop

And we must consider --

What is this sleep

We fear to enter?

We must think now,

And we must consider

What it is

That we must consider,

While the wind sweeps

The gutters and the streets

Now in this time of winter.

When the mind sleeps,

The body withers and grows bitter.

We must stop now

And consider,

Before the lilies rise,

Why the god denies

An easy sleep.

We must stop now,

And we must consider

What it is that can be lost to us,

If the will should blanch and wither

Now

In this time of winter.
