The New York Daily News has a history of publishing forceful covers that assail politicians and take strong stances on controversial issues like gun control.
Last week, after the shooting in San Bernardino, California, that left 14 dead, the paper published a cover with the headline "God Isn't Fixing This." The cover took aim at politicians who responded to the attack by offering prayers rather than concrete policies to end gun violence. It also published a separate cover last week calling NRA Executive Vice President and CEO Wayne LaPierre a "terrorist."
On Monday, the Daily News followed up by addressing people who were unhappy with the covers, including Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz. The paper took a different approach this time, sharing this message with critics of its pro-gun control stance: "To all those who have been offended by hearing the truth about our nation's gun scourge & the NRA & cowardly pols who think nothing's wrong: Everything is Awesome!"
The accompanying article focused on President Barack Obama's national address from the Oval Office on Sunday -- his first since 2010 -- which was prompted by last week's shooting. The article pointedly compared the "evil ISIS butchers abroad" to "gun-stockpiling anarchists in our own backyard."
