Dr. Dan Siegel On The New 3 Rs Of Education

The New 3 Rs Of Education

By Sarah Klein

What if all it took to better your health was inner reflection? The willingness to look inward can significantly affect our physical health, neuropsychiatrist and New York Times bestselling author Dr. Daniel J. Siegel, M.D., said at Thrive, The Huffington Post's second Third Metric conference on redefining success beyond the two metrics of money and power.

The effects can be easily seen in an analogy of a physician treating a patient suffering from a cold. A little empathy allows the physician to realize the patient is a college student, during exam season, and how trying that must be, he said. Just that bit of compassion has been shown to boost the immune system so much that the patient may recover from that cold an entire day sooner, he said. This approach is something he's dubbed "mindsight," and he argued it should be taught in schools.

"What we need to teach in schools is not just reading, writing, 'rithmetic," he said. "We should have reflection, relationships and resilience be the new 3 Rs."
