A teen with Down syndrome who was shot at Perry Hall High School is still listed in critical condition at the hospital.
Daniel Borowy, 17, had his back to alleged gunman Robert Wayne Gladden Jr. when he was shot at the Maryland school's cafeteria.
School aids pushed students under the table to protect them, ABC News reported.
Borowy's mother Rosemary wasn't comfortable speaking out about the shooting, but the mother of Borowy's good friend told the station that the mother is in shock.
"I was just dying for Rosemary and Daniel, feeling so bad," Trish Smelser told the station. "It's just a horrible thing to go through, but when you have a special needs child, it's just extra devastating. They don't communicate as well. It's just so hard."
Borowy is in critical condition with broken ribs and a bruised lung, but Smelser is confident that he'll make a full recovery.
"He's doing good. He's awake and he can wiggle his fingers and toes," Smelser's daughter Stephanie told ABC News.

Cops believe that Gladden, 15, wasn't aiming for anyone in particular when he opened fire on the first day of school, Monday, at about 11 a.m. He's being tried as an adult, charged with attempted first-degree murder.
The day of the incident, Gladden posted chilling Facebook messages, including, "First day of school, last day of my life."
