Author Andrew Lohse pulls back the curtain on the "psychological coercion" and "culture of misogyny" in Dartmouth College's fraternity scene in his new book Confessions of an Ivy League Frat Boy: A Memoir, and he dropped by HuffPost Live on Wednesday to share a few anecdotes of the raunchy revelry that's become prominent in Greek life.
Much of what he shared is to be expected, like binge drinking and sharing humiliating, sexually-explicit stories about women on campus. But what Lohse regrets most about his time with the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity was the most disgusting parts of the hazing process.
"One of those last nights of pledge hazing when I was a senior, watching those sophomore boys swimming in a pool of urine and vomit, it was traumatizing just to watch that and feel like I was a part of that," he told host Ricky Camilleri.
Some fraternity members claim that braving shameful experiences together creates a spirit of unity, but Lohse said the bond is a "totally temporary thing."
"Being vomited on by someone does not make them a lifelong friend," he said. "The idea that sharing these disgusting, traumatic things can bring people together in a meaningful way, it's a little bit ridiculous. It will bring people together just because they have this disgusting knowledge of each other that they wouldn't want other people to know about, and that just helps keep it more secret."
