David Cassidy On Dealing With Mother's Death (VIDEO)

WATCH: David Cassidy Shares His Recent Heartache

In the '70s, "The Partridge Family" star David Cassidy was a teen idol with millions of adoring fans. But even before his DWI arrest early Wednesday, the former "Partridge Family" star had been dealing with some recent personal struggles. In an upcoming episode of "Oprah: Where Are They Now?," he opens up about his mother, who died in December after a long battle with dementia.

"She had severe dementia and had been in care for seven years," Cassidy says. "Watching your mother disappear, and a loved one disappear, is very, very difficult."

"The only way in the last couple of years of her life I knew she recognized me, was that when I would show up, I'd start to sing to her a little bit -- and a tear would come down her eye, down her face," he recalls.

"So it was really very emotional for me," Cassidy says. "It still is."

The episode of "Oprah: Where Are They Now?" featuring Cassidy airs Sunday at 10 p.m. ET on OWN.
