David Diaz Arrested In Connection With Brutal Slaying of Gay Immigrant Freddy Roberto Canul-Arguello

Arrest Made In Brutal Slaying of Gay Immigrant

On Friday, SFPD officers arrested David Diaz and charged him with the murder of Freddy Roberto Canul-Arguello.

Police discovered Canul-Aguello's badly burned body in a blue recycling bin last month after being called with reports of an early morning brush fire near Buena Vista Park.

While extinguishing the flames, firefighters found the partially-burned body in a blue recycling bin near the park's tennis courts. Police said at the time that he was already dead at the time the fire began.

Canul-Arguello was killed near the tennis courts in the early morning hours of June 10, according to police. No cause of death has been released.

Diaz is also being charged with arson.

Freddy Canul-Arguello was open about his sexuality, and came to San Francisco from the Yucatan region in Mexico four years ago because he heard of the city's gay-friendly reputation, his brother said.

Although Freddy Canul-Arguello found an accepting home in San Francisco, his brother and other relatives wonder whether his sexuality could have motivated his killer.
