The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee put up a large banner Monday at its Washington headquarters that reads, "FIRE THE TEA PARTY CONGRESS," continuing the theme from a press conference last week when committee staffers distributed pink slips made out to House Republicans.
"For nearly two years this Tea Party Republican Congress has failed to get the job done and now it's clear the Tea Party experiment has failed," DCCC Chairman Steve Israel, a New York congressman, said in a press release on Friday. "We're handing out pink slips, a notice of termination for the Tea Party Republican Majority because it's time for them to go."
Although Democrats have a slight edge in the congressional ballot, it is unlikely that they will pick up the 25 seats needed to regain the majority in the House. Israel said he does "not get wrapped up in independent analyses" when asked at Friday's press conference about the odds of Democrats retaking control.
By branding the Republican House majority as the "Tea Party Congress," Democrats are seeking to highlight the GOP establishment's shift further toward the right since the 2010 midterm elections.
