Phillips began writing the "Dear Abby" advice column in 1956 -- in fact, you probably grew up reading it. The title came from her pen name, Abigail van Buren, and her daughter continues to write the column today. A penchant for doling out wisdom -- you can find some of her best advice here -- must have run in her family as her twin sister, Esther Friedman Lederer, wrote the equally well-known Ann Landers column.
"Dear Abby" became so synonymous with Phillips' wise words and quippy one-liners that it inspired the names of songs, including one by The Hearts in 1964 and one by John Prine in 1973. Judging from the response that Phillips' passing has elicited from women on Twitter, "Dear Abby" advice resonates just as much today as it did 50 years ago.
