Top Dem: Boehner Lets Tea Party 'Call The Shots'

Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) holds House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) responsible for the failure of immigration reform this year, calling him “the obstacle” holding up a vote in an interview Monday with the Fusion network’s Jorge Ramos.

The Democratic representative described immigration reform as a moral obligation and a “political necessity” for the Republican Party before criticizing Boehner as a tea party puppet.

“Right now we have a bipartisan bill that passed the Senate sitting on John Boehner’s desk that he could take up right now, and if he allowed the whole House to vote, it would pass. But he is the obstacle, as is the tea party,” Wasserman Schultz said. “Time is of the essence. It is in his hands … He continues to allow the tea party to call the shots.”

Wasserman Schultz has previously tackled the GOP for its approach to undocumented immigrants, attacking Republicans for suggesting "that we should just pack them all up and ship them back to their own countries and that in fact it should be a crime and we should arrest them all” -- a claim she made during a Christian Science Monitor breakfast in May 2011.

On Monday, she also took a swipe at the tea party for “hurtling us from manufactured crisis to manufactured crisis."
