Deep Sea Creature PHOTOS Show Blobfish, Bioluminescent Plankton & Other Bizarre Creatures

LOOK: 31 Mind-Blowing Deep Sea Creatures

When most people think of sea animals, they picture playful dolphins, formidable sharks, or hulking blue whales. But some creatures living in the bottommost depths of the sea are a little less familiar. From the droopy blobfish (shown here), to the terrifying Fangtooth fish, to the hypnotizing flashlight fish, the ocean's deep is a circus of curious characters. Even scientists still don't know very much about the denizens of the deep.

But one thing we do know is that it's populated by some pretty peculiar creatures. Last month, scientists reported finding deep sea crabs that could detect ultraviolet light--even though they live in a world of nearly complete darkness. The finding surprised many biologists, who had assumed that bottom-dwellers would likely be sightless.

Scientists are still finding bizarre new deep sea creatures like these crabs every year. Check out the slideshow below to see the wildest critters the ocean's depths have to offer.
