The Laid-Back Parenting Advice Snoop Dogg Gave Deion Sanders

Who knew the man who brought us "Gin & Juice" would also have some pearls of parental wisdom to share? Hip-hop artist Snoop Dogg recently made an appearance on OWN's reality series "Deion's Family Playbook" and gave some impromptu fatherly advice to his friend, former pro-athlete Deion Sanders.

In the above clip from the episode, Sanders explains that he's struggling with the idea that his teenage son Shilo wants to get into the music industry instead of following in his football footsteps. Snoop can relate -- his own son Cordell is far more interested in sports than music.

"You know it hurts you as a father that they're not going down the path that you want," Sanders says to Snoop.

Snoop agrees, but tells Sanders he's missing a key point. "At the same time, as a father, by you creating so many different avenues and options, you created this," Snoop says. "You helped him find his way."

After hearing one of Shilo's tracks, Snoop assures Sanders his son has talent. "For a 14-year-old to be doing this? I got 35-year-old guys working with me that don't know this," Snoop tells Sanders. "He's making hit records, man."

He encourages Sanders to let his son blaze his own trail. "As a father, you have to let him walk his own path," Snoop says. "You've got to let him go into uncharted territory."

Likewise, Sanders tells Snoop that his son has "got it." When Snoop hears Cordell has pro-athlete potential, he takes it to heart. "I rely on you, I rely on my friends that's in that world to tell me the truth, because I don't believe the hype," he says.

Snoop's parenting style is as laid back as his lyrics, something Sanders appreciates. "Snoop, number one, is a father to me -- a darn good father," Sanders says. "I've seen him interact with his kids and his family. And to give me that advice that he gave me, I will treasure it forever."

"Deion's Family Playbook"
