Thousands of college students, teachers and activists rallied in New Delhi over the weekend, clashing with riot police near the India Gate.

The protests were set off by the brutal gang rape of a medical student on a city bus on Dec. 16. The victim, who was flown to Singapore for treatment Wednesday, is now clinging to life after sustaining serious injuries in the brutal attack. As of Friday, her condition was reported to be deteriorating, according to the Associated Press.

Update 12/28 5:10 p.m. -- The Associated Press reports that the victim of the gang rape has died in Singapore.

The rallies protested against sexual assaults on women, India's "growing incidence of rape, and its slow and ineffective prosecution," according to the Atlantic.

Police used water cannons, tear gas and batons to disperse protesters. All in all, 85 people have been injured in the demonstrations, according to the Wall Street Journal. A similar protest in northeast India turned deadly when police reportedly opened fire on a crowd using live ammunition.

The Wall Street Journal adds that the number of protesters have dwindled in recent days, but they still numbered in the hundreds Thursday.
