Muñecas, 2010, gouache on tinted paper, 20" x 25"
This is another piece from the Frida Kahlo-inspired series. "Muñeca" means "doll". It's a term of endearment, usually used to address little girls. I thought of these women as three spinster sisters; that my friend Danielle who holds the rag doll is playing the part of the permanently infantilized sister, who is tended to by Nancy, the caretaker sister. Alex sits on the ledge, the risk-taking, independent sister (Alex is, in real life, after all, a horse-trainer). With multiple "Fridas", I could depict the various dimensions of personality that Frida herself embodied, in a single picture.
