As crowds poured into Yeni Kapı Square to celebrate the Democracy Watch before it is finalized on Wednesday, millions of people gathered waving their red white flags under the blue-sky dome. Differences were put aside on a day when everyone came together for a single mission: to defend the Turkish nation from the bloody hands of traitors who wanted to hijack their democracy.

This event wasn’t similar to just any protest or demonstration that we have seen over the past years. The Democracy and Martyrs Rally took place to commemorate the blessed sacrifice of those who courageously fought with their lives to protect the Turkish nation.

On Sunday, August 7 people from different ethnic, political, and religious backgrounds flocked Yeni Kapı from highways, railroads and seaway. There was even a man who swam the Bosphorus with a Turkish flag in his hand. Actors, athletes, businesswomen, the rich and the poor were among the masses that convened in Istanbul to demonstrate their solidarity in the victory of upholding Democracy. Next to the Commander in Chief Erdogan stood the Prime Minister and the leaders of People’s Republican Party (CHP) and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).

Similar to military coups of the past (1960, 1971, 1980 and 1997) the recent coup attempt was traditional in the sense that tyrants tried to control people through tanks and weapons while attempting to take over the media. The bloody handed coup-plotters thought they could get the job done by seizing the power of the people by lining up tanks across the Bosphorus bridge, bombing the Turkish Parliament and police stations and opening fire on unarmed civilians.

The mastermind behind these terrorists forgot to take into consideration an important fact in their shrewd plan. The will power of the people would triumph. As in the past coup experiences it was expected for people to stay inside their homes and listen or watch television/radio stations that echo the military perpetrators’ message around the nation. They thought people would show obedience to their tyranny without defiance.

They could not be more wrong. They overlooked the power within people.

As the Turkish nation repelled the coup-attempt, now it’s a new chapter in Turkish history. Today’s demonstration at Yeni Kapı was the kickoff. All three party leaders and the President sent a strong message to the enemy within and without. Their treason against the people will not go unpunished.

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Hulusi Akar reiterated the President’s message.

Now that Turkey looks ahead, once it cleanses its system of these FETO terrorists within, it will surely bolster the democratic edifice by a new Constitution and a new Presidential system.

This is a new dawn for Turkey’s Independence.
