Actress, reality-TV star and former Mrs. Charlie Sheen Denise Richards has written a tell-all book about her tumultuous life. Richards sat down with Matt Lauer earlier today to discuss her new memoir, “The Real Girl Next Door,” a book she hopes will help those going through difficult times to “have hope that [they] can get to the other side,” just as she did after she "hit rock bottom."
In her book, Richards delves into the hot topic of her ex-husband Charlie Sheen, and why the man she married is worlds different than the man she divorced. “The man I fell in love with is very compassionate, humble, has a wonderful heart. And the behavior that a lot of us saw in the last six months is not the person that I met and fell in love with.”
She says that though she tried to shelter their two young daughters from media scrutiny during the Charlie Sheen addiction news, she did try to explain as best she could what was happening to their father. “I did have to have a conversation with them about addiction and got a book to read to them because I was just lying to them so much.”
However, Richards makes it clear that this is “not a Charlie Sheen bashing book,” stating, “I still care for him very much and want him well...he’s a survivor and if anyone can pull themselves together, it’s Charlie.”
Richards’ memoir also touches on topics such as her controversial relationship with Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora, her life as a single mother and the moment she knew her marriage was over.
