Derek Jeter Denies Giving Gift Baskets To One-Night Stands

One of baseball's great rumors appears to be bunk. Emphasis on "appears."

Refuting an old New York Post article and reiterating a statement he made last year, Yankees great Derek Jeter told sportscaster Joe Buck this week that rumors of him giving gift baskets filled with his own memorabilia to one-night stands were “dumb.”

It’s a dumb story, and you really have to be dumber to believe it,” Jeter said.

That story was first reported in 2011, when an anonymous source told the Post that “Derek has girls stay with him at his apartment in New York, and then he gets them a car to take them home the next day. Waiting in his car is a gift basket containing signed Jeter memorabilia, usually a signed baseball.”

Jeter avoided commenting on the tale for years. But in the week before his last game in the majors, New York Magazine published a feature on the shortstop, quoting him as asking, “Who comes up with a story like that?"

To the chagrin of all those who were hoping for a pinstripe-themed basket of their own, the rumor mill surrounding Jeter’s dating life has slowed as of late, following the news of his engagement to Hannah Davis. Maybe this refutation will finally quash the tale, once and for all.
