According to Woodward, Bush was absolutely certain he was on the right course on Iraq. The writer said that when Bush invited key Republicans to the White House to discuss Iraq, the president told them, 'I will not withdraw even if Laura and Barney are the only ones supporting me,"' referring to his wife and Scottish terrier. - Washington Post - Friday, September 29, 2006.

Dear Laura Bush (and Barney)

Forgive me writing like this - but this is a desperate plea for your help.

Already over 60% of the American public are no longer supporting your husband (and master) on Iraq. And as you can see - that number is growing rapidly.

George has now told key Republicans that he will not withdraw from Iraq "even if Laura and Barney are the only ones supporting me".

No pressure but - it's clearly in your hands!

You may be the only ones he will listen to.

• He didn't listen to Richard Clarke who served President Reagan and George's father with distinction.

• He won't listen to General Colin Powell.

• He can't listen to Brent Scowcroft.

• He refused to listen to his own dad - who knew a thing or two about Iraq.

• And he isn't listening to our most senior military leaders.

But perhaps he will listen to you two...

Laura - you have been through so much in your life. Perhaps more than we can imagine... You have carried yourself with grace and dignity. You have told your husband when "enough is enough". He conceded that it was you who admonished him about the "Bin Laden Dead Or Alive" and "Bring It On" jibes. And it was you who told him off for play-acting "the cowboy".

Now your nation needs you.

Barney - you have been a loyal and faithful supporter of your master. You have selflessly allowed yourself to be incorporated in all those cutesy-pie videos that Karl Rove dreams up to show how wonderful your owner is.

You see, if he knows that you two (without of course in any way withdrawing your undying love for this wonderful human who has made you both so happy) - are withdrawing your support for his Iraq policy - it may just give him pause (and paws!) for thought.

So - I implore you. A teacher and a terrier.

A nation turns its lonely eyes to you. Woo-woo-woo...

(Barney - that's "woof-woof-woof")
