Detroit Coach Shoots Two Teens, Killing One, After Alleged Attempted Robbery Near High School

Questions Remain After Shooting Of Teens Near High School

An alleged attempted robbery of an assistant basketball coach outside a Detroit high school Friday evening has left one teenager dead and another wounded.

The episode took place around 7:15 p.m. near Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School on Detroit's east side. WXYZ reports that two teens walked up to the coach, a 70-year-old man, while he was escorting two female basketball players to their cars. When one of the young men allegedly pulled out a gun and grabbed the coach, he retaliated by taking out his own weapon and shooting them both, according to the local news station.

One teen was found dead in the median of Larned Street and the other was listed in serious condition. The Detroit Police Department said the coach is a concealed pistol license holder. WDIV reports the coach, who they identify as Ernest Robinson, was taken into custody Saturday. According to the news station, he is also DPD reserve officer.

Fox 2 named 16-year old Michael Scott as the youth shot to death in the encounter. His mother, Priscilla Scott told the news station she didn't believe her son owned a gun.

"They weren't in danger of my son," she said. "I don't feel, not Michael, he is not like that, I don't believe it."

No students or school personnel were harmed in the incident, Detroit Public Schools said in a statement. DPS police are cooperating with DPD, which is leading the investigation of the incident.

"The school has many security features which were in place at the time of the incidents, as well as a full security plan as do all DPS schools," the statement read. "These will be reviewed as they regularly are and after any incidents."
