The Wayne County Sheriff's Department is riding high after a judge at a Thursday forfeiture hearing awarded the agency six cars used for illegal drag racing this summer.

The seizures took place in Detroit this past July at the intersection of Fort and Woodmere Street and also at Warren and Livernois Avenue.

Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Virgil Smith called the evidence in the cases "overwhelming."

“Today’s rulings will go a long way to show we are serious about ending this nonsense," Sheriff Benny Napoleon said in a release. "Drag racing is dangerous, it threatens lives and ruins the peace that hardworking citizens deserve in their neighborhoods.”

The vehicles involved in the forfeiture are a 1997 Ford Mustang, a 1988 Ford Mustang, a 1984 Chevy S-10, a 1996 Cadillac, a 1994 Camaro and a 2001 Mustang.

These car seizures may also create some trouble at home. Three of the cases involved parents who said their sons took their vehicles out to drag race. Another involved a car that was taken out by the son of a man's girlfriend.

A spokeswoman for the Sheriff's Department told the Detroit Free Press the vehicles will be be utilized in undercover investigations to stop drag racing or sold at auction to fund narcotics enforcement.
