Amazing Principal Helps Save Student Devon Octave's Life

It’s scary to think about where 15-year-old student Devon Octave would be without his high school principal.

Several weeks ago, Octave went into cardiac arrest after his wrestling practice at Master Lakes Academy in Hialeah, Fla. School Principal Rene Rovirosa happened to walk by after Octave collapsed and was able to give the student CPR, reports local outlet WFOR-TV.

The CPR may have helped save Octave’s life.

"I thought for sure that he was gone. I said, 'Don’t you do that Devon. Don't you leave now.’ I remember saying that," said Rovirosa to Octave during a press conference this week.

Rovirosa kept Octave breathing until paramedics arrived on the scene. At Miami Children’s Hospital, Octave learned that he has a congenital heart condition. Doctors implanted a defibrillator in the teen to avoid future incidents, reports WFOR-TV.

"I just received CPR class six days before," Rovirosa said at the press conference.

“He’s a friend for life now,” Rovirosa of Octave, according to WFOR-TV.

Octave’s condition, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, is the chief cause of unexpected cardiac death for young athletes, reports WTVJ-TV.
