The artist formerly known as Puff Daddy (and P. Diddy and Puffy and Sean Combs) went on "Kocktails with Khloé" last night and shared the unlikely story behind his name changes.
In 1997, Diddy wanted to sample Bowie's monster hit "Let's Dance" for his soon-to-be chart-topping song "Been Around the World" featuring none other than the Notorious B.I.G. and Mase.
Diddy reminisced to Khloe that in order to "clear the sample," he had to meet with the Starman in person.
"I met with him and I was so inspired ... I knew him as the white boy who was on 'Soul Train,'" he explained, "but then I started to do my research and I saw that he had all these different personalities. It kind of empowered me and gave me the confidence to have my stage persona."
The business mogul continued, "A lot of people don’t understand that Puff Daddy and all that is separate from who Sean Combs is. [Bowie] was a great example of reinvention."
He even talked about how he "saw him around his wife, Iman" and in the studio and that "it was like two different people, always trying to push it forward."
Khloe earnestly asked Combs if he gets offended if people call him by a different persona, like Puff. He confidently assured her that he doesn't.
But, then he dropped a bomb and said he's releasing an album under his persona Puff Daddy that's more "celebratory" than previous releases.
Here's hoping that this album overshadows the new documentary that claims he was involved in Tupac's murder.
