The Internet was chock full of April Fool's Day surprises this week; included in participation was the popular direct-broadcast satellite service provider DISH Network (DishLATINO).
The video clip first leaked Monday from the YouTube user EnchiladaRoja93 displaying a middle-aged naked player sneaking into a professional soccer game. In the clip, the "exhibitionist" shocks players by entering the field with nothing but cleats and socks, dribbling his way to the goal. Before DISH claimed ownership of the video, the YouTube clip -- "El Streaker"-- generated hundreds of thousands of views in just hours. Additionally, the Being Latino Facebook page generated than 30,000 "likes" and thousands of shares in just a few hours and Mexican footballer Marco Fabián tweeted the clip, producing a stir among his 1.12 million followers as well.
DISH Network subsequently revealed the exhibitionist man in the video is spokesman for the brand, Eugenio Derbez. DISH also revealed the video leak is part of a greater campaign, DISH revealed in a press release:
Those who see the video may choose one of three different endings. This interactive experience allows viewers to see Derbez interrupting an interview with a player after the game, finishing in prison (where he is a well-known character) and ending in the middle of a fictional soap opera. Viewers can also see exclusive scenes Derbez talking about Aaron Abasolo, one of its most popular characters.
To perpetuate the April Fool's Day joke, DishLATINO wrapped major Latino newspapers with a tabloid-style headline showing Derbez's on-field chase.
