18 Post-Split New Year's Resolutions That Will Inspire You

The start of a new year is a perfect time to reflect on how far you've come and how far you still have to go -- and that's never more true than after divorce. "New year, new start," you tell yourself, and really mean it. (Hey, if being single means you get to call all the shots in your life, this just might be the year you hold to those New Year's resolutions!)

Below, HuffPost Divorce readers share the one post-split New Year's resolution they're pledging to themselves in the coming year. Read on for their inspiring goals, then head to the comments to share yours.

1. "I will not define myself by my divorce any longer."

2. "To forgive myself for making such a bad choice in marrying him to begin with."

3. "I will get my divorce finalized in 2014! My second resolution? That I will never again lose myself in an effort to follow any man's dreams!"

4. "Let go of the anger. Being bitter is only hurting me, not him."

5. "I have learned through this holiday season that I am over my ex, but I still struggle with the thought of my kids being in another family. I have to work on that in 2014 because I am sure at some point he'll remarry. I need to let my kids know that it's OK."

6. "Five years after my divorce, I need to stop swearing off marriage. It's time to be open to infinite possibilities, even remarriage."

7. "I'm resolving to not change for another woman. I'm going to focus on my kids and myself instead this year."

8. "To be good to my ex-wife. We teach our children through our actions. Today my ex and I are very good friends and we refuse to let the kids play one against the other."

9. "My resolution is to be a better stepmother."

10. "To stop 'explaining' why the divorce happened. It just did -- and I need to accept that and move on."

11. "I've already started my goal. It's simply to wish him happiness and love and to continue to get along for the sake of all."

12. "I refuse to make a man my whole life again."

13. "My resolution? To not get married again. I don't need to risk needing another divorce."

14. "To put me first for once. I need to rebuild my self-esteem -- it took such a big hit after divorce. Today I've learned that I have to be my own cheerleader."

15. "I've been four years single as of February and I'm really enjoying this time to explore. I'm getting to know myself and I'll continue to do that going into 2014. Divorced people don't take the time they need to be alone -- so many jump right back in only to make another mistake! I'd rather be single."

16. "To find someone capable of emotional support and empathy."

17. "I will not allow myself to be stressed out trying to co-parent anymore. It's not my job to run behind a grown man and make sure he does what he's supposed to do. I will still do the best I can for my kids, with or without my ex's help."

18. "To have it be official and done with! And to live my own life to the fullest and be at peace."
