DMX has expressed his gratitude for the police officers who saved his life after he was found unconscious outside a Yonkers, New York, hotel in February.
To return the benevolent act, the rapper recently gave a free show on Oct. 21 during the annual “Toughman Competition,” a charity boxing event for the police and fire departments of Yonkers. For the 45-year-old, the life-saving experience was a stark contrast to his past run-ins with the law.
“There’s a few officers here tonight that, on Feb. 8, saved my life,” he said during his performance. “To go from at one point running from the police to get away from what I was doing to having police save my life. True heroes. And I’m not speaking from what somebody else told me or someone else opinion, this is my personal experience.”
According to the Associated Press, X resumed breathing after he was given a opioid reversal medication by paramedics, in addition to oxygen and CPR provided by officers. His lawyer, Murray Richman went on to confirm that the rapper had stopped breathing and suffers from asthma, but did not know the cause of the incident.
Proceeds from the event will go to a number of local service organizations including the Ronald McDonald House of New York, and the New York Firefighters Burn Center Foundation to help assist wounded service members.
