Do What You Want to Be

Last year, I wrote my first book. It was a dream of mine for many years but one that I never took action on. Writing the book was an incredibly rewarding experience, and I realized after it was published that, had I just been writing all along, I wouldn't have had to wait so long for the satisfying feeling of reaching my goal.

Since my book was published, people ask me all the time how I did it. They tell me that they dream of writing a book too and ask me for my advice. The only really solid piece of advice I can offer is this. "If you want to write a book, write."

It's the same advice I give to people who want to run a marathon, lose weight, get a new job, or become a dancer.

"You must do what you want to be."

If you want to be a dancer, dance; if you want to be a painter, paint; if you want to run a marathon, run; and if you want to be a musician, play music.

Dreams are a powerful force in our lives and visualization can certainly help us reach our goals, but the surest way to getting what you want is to start taking action. Bold action? Not necessarily.

If you want to write, just start writing. It doesn't mean you have to write and publish a book in six months, but it does mean consciously setting aside time to write a little every day. If you want to run a marathon, you can start off running a mile and building up as you start to feel more comfortable. The key is just start taking some action.

And make sure your audio matches your video. Many people tell me they want to write a book, but instead of writing, they are camped out on the couch watching hours and hours of TV. Many people tell me that they would love to run a marathon, but they've never laced up their sneakers and gone out to give running a try.

When your audio matches your video it means that in addition to talking about what you want, you are also taking action and your actions support you in reaching your goals. Many people live what I call a "contradictory life." This means that they talk about what they want their life to look like but every single thing they do contradicts what they are saying. Their lives "look good on paper," but the reality of how they are living does not match up.

So many people tell me, "It's not the simple," but it really is. Dance, write, run, paint, teach, sail, or play the guitar. If you want something bad enough, you'll find a way. If you're not willing to actually partake in an activity, it's worth examining why. Is this really something that you want to do? If it is; how can you rearrange your life to fit it in?

"I really want to write a book," one of my clients told me, "but I have no time. No really, you just don't understand," she proclaimed, "I work all day and I have so much on my plate."

When I wrote my book, I worked full-time, took care of my mom and my home, and ran a business on the side. I got up at 4 a.m. every morning and wrote for 2-3 hours before work. I gave up a few weekends with friends to get things done, and I stopped watching TV.

The same client who told me about her packed schedule watched a minimum of five hours of TV during the week, and eight hours during the weekend. That seemed like enough time to me to squeeze in a little writing.

What do you want to do or be? Are there things you want to do that you haven't gotten to yet? Think about what you want and then start taking the necessary steps to see it through. I can almost guarantee that the pride you feel from reaching your goals will be so rewarding that it may just inspire you to keep on reaching for more.
