Once again I have to thank the Brad Blog for the latest update on Ann Coulter's electoral adventures, tracked by Jose Lambiet at the Palm Beach Post, and which I first reported on in February. Though the syndicated columnist did not respond to the registered letter sent her by local authorities, she has retained a lawyer, Marcos D. Jiménez, of Miami-based Kenny Nachwalter, which worked for George W. Bush's side in the 2000 presidential election brouhaha. The story thus far:
A poll worker reported to his supervisors that he saw Coulter try to vote in the precinct closest to her Palm Beach home. But when she was told the address on her voter's registration was elsewhere, Coulter ran out instead of correcting it and ended up voting in a precinct that wasn't hers. Knowingly voting in the wrong precinct in Florida is a felony.
Elections Supervisor Arthur Anderson gave Coulter until April 30 to explain what happened, but she has yet to answer his registered letters. Now with Jimenez, Kelly said, officials will wait "a few more weeks" before starting a procedure that could strip Coulter of her right to vote here and refer the case to State Attorney Barry Krischer for possible prosecution.
Coulter couldn't be reached and Jimenez didn't return calls.
While the blogosphere has been following the story with a certain amount of glee, the traditional media have been almost unanimously silent. Besides the Palm Beach Post itself, only Editor & Publisher -- on line at least -- has shown consistent interest. Not one of the however-many news outlets that carry Ms. Coulter's column has reported a word, so it's likely that most of her readers know nothing about the felony allegations, and her editors don't care.
PS: As I've said before, the misadventures of Ann Coulter don't interest me much, but I feel a sense of responsibility because it was one of my readers that Ms. Coulter vented on, as reported in Sploid.
PPS: My previous caveat about discussion of this issue still applies: I will delete all transgender jokes and comments that go way off topic. My primary concern here is that the story has progressed this far, without any mention by news outlets that carry her column.
