Dog Surf-A-Thon 2011 Raises $100,000

PHOTOS: Woof! Surfing Dogs Take Over The Waves

This weekend, canine surf-competitors and their owners flocked to Del Mar's Dog Beach for the 5th annual Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon hosted by the Helen Woodward Animal Center and Eukanuba.

4,000 spectators came to see the 80 surfing pooches hang-ten. The Surf-A-Thon (including 70 vendors) raised over $100,000 for orphaned animals and presented a tribute to working dogs including police, search and rescue and service dogs.

A 14-year-old Jack Russell Terrier named Buddy took home the first place “Best in Surf” trophy (and a one year supply of Eukanuba pet food!) for the fifth year in a row. “That last heat was probably the best of Buddy’s life,” said Bruce Hooker, Buddy's owner. During the event, Buddy became the first inductee into the Surf Dog Hall of Fame.

But Buddy wasn't the only winner -- Abbie'G, an Australian Kelpie, set the first-ever Guinness World Record for the longest surf ride by a dog, reports KTLA. She surfed the winning wave for 65-yards.
