Most couture shows double as celebrity press junkets, with photographers and press swanning around high-profile actresses shipped in for the occasion. But Dolce & Gabbana decided to eschew the media frenzy for their first-ever couture show last week, limiting the guest list to buyers, select couture customers and very, very few editors.
So did less press mean less drama? Welp, at least four people fainted. So no, not really.
As one of the only newspaper reporters there, the Telegraph's Luke Leitch provided a thorough rundown of what sounds like a sweltering marathon of fashion. The couture show began with another sort of show: an opera, Bellini's Bel Canto's Norma, followed by a libation-filed party (natch). The next day was the runway show, staged inside a former monastery, followed by a post-show dinner.
Through all of this, temperatures were soaring. Leitch reports that two tailors in the Dolce & Gabbana atelier fainted while prepping the collection, while a guest fainted in front of the orchestra pit at the opera. A fourth individual, presumably a show-goer, is said to have fainted on the beach the day of the show.
Yikes. At least there were no models fainting (as far as we know) -- not that it'd be the first time. Abbey Lee Kershaw famously fainted right after walking the runway at Alexander McQueen's Spring 2009 show, blaming her too-tight leather corset for the episode. During Lorena Sarbu’s Fall 2012 presentation in New York, a model passed out right in front of editors and buyers. Another model felt faint at Kaelen Haworth's Fall 2012 presentation in New York, walking off her pedestal in the middle of the event.
Of course nothing compares to "The Girl Who Suddenly Collapsed" on "America's Next Top Model", a.k.a. Rebecca from Cycle 4. That was fairly terrifying.
Luckily all fainters from the Dolce & Gabbana couture extravaganza are fine. The only concerning matter that remains: we need pictures! Anybody manage to infiltrate the top-secret show and snap some Instagrams?
