Speaking in New Hampshire on Monday on issues of immigration and national security, Donald Trump asked the crowd in front of him a rhetorical question: “Who is really the friend of women and the LGBT community: Donald Trump with actions, or Hillary Clinton with her words?”
Well, if the answer wasn’t entirely evident before -- to name one difference, Clinton supports nationwide marriage equality, while Trump does not -- it’s even more obvious now, after Gawker did a bit of handiwork and uncovered the following clip from 2014. In it, Trump phones in to "Fox & Friends," and gives the most circuitous, evasive statement possible when discussing the then-polarizing topic of Michael Sam’s draft day kiss with former boyfriend Vito Cammisano.
“We’ve become so politically correct in this country that the country is going to hell -- people are afraid to talk,” Trump said at the time. “They’re afraid to express their own thoughts ... I’ve heard many people, I’m not even speaking for myself, but I’ve heard many people that thought the display after he was chosen was inappropriate.”
"And whether or not it was, I don’t know,” he went on. “But it was certainly out there a little bit. And I’m very happy that he got chosen. I’m all for it. I think it’s great that he got chosen. I hope he does so well.”
And then came the kicker: “But I thought, when he ... you know, when -- when he was really going at it. I mean, whether -- that ... I -- I haven’t seen anything like that in a while. He was really going at it.”
It seems that Trump isn’t (or at the very, very least, wasn’t) as staunch a supporter of the “LB” community as he tried to make it appear on the stage this week.
