Donald Trump Distances Himself From Roger Stone

Earlier Friday, I wrote about an interesting piece from Maggie Haberman, who spoke to renowned political trickster Roger Stone about the presidential ambitions of Donald Trump. In that article, Stone trashed many of the politicians that Trump would ostensibly be running against, boasting that Trump would be working with a $2 billion war chest -- an insane figure, given that President Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) combined to spend only $1 billion.

Since then, I've received a written statement from Trump:

Recently, Roger Stone has appeared in the news making very favorable statements about me and my potential candidacy for President. While I greatly appreciate his flattering comments, Roger does not represent me and is not an advisor to my potential campaign. I will make a decision sometime prior to June as to whether or not I will run, and am greatly honored by the recent Newsweek poll featured on CNN, and others.

Shortly thereafter, I spoke with Trump himself, who reiterated, "I appreciate the nice things that Roger has been saying about me and my campaign, but he does not represent me and is not advising my campaign at all."

In addition, I'd like to draw your attention to a significant passage from Jeffrey Toobin's 2009 profile of Roger Stone from The New Yorker:

Over the years, Stone's relationships with colleagues and clients have been so combustible that his value as a messenger has been compromised. Stone worked for Donald Trump as an occasional lobbyist and as an adviser when Trump considered running for president in 2000. "Roger is a stone-cold loser," Trump told me. "He always tries taking credit for things he never did."

My guess is that Roger Stone will not be taking a particularly active role in a Trump for President campaign anytime soon.
