Trump Campaign Replaces One Controversial County Chair With Another

Tracey Winbush once tweeted a disparaging remark about Islam.

The woman Donald Trump’s campaign tapped to replace a Mahoning County, Ohio, county chair who made racist comments also has tweeted controversial comments in the past.

In 2015, Tracey Winbush tweeted an article about a group of high school girls who had visited an Islamic center on Long Island and suggested that Islam was not a peaceful religion. Trump has proposed banning all Muslims from entering the United States.

“Islam is a religion of peace if you ignore the whole suicide bombing, burning people alive, beheading, rape, child marriage and clitorectomy thing,” an image accompanying the tweet read.

Last year, she also tweeted a video suggesting that Osama bin Laden was killed in 2001. Bin Laden was killed in 2011.

The Trump campaign did not immediately return a request for comment.

Winbush also appeared to be a fan of Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R-Ohio), who has refused to back Trump. The Columbus Dispatch noticed on Thursday that Winbush began deleting many of her tweets ― several of which were critical of Trump ― after she was appointed chair.

In a tweet on Thursday, Winbush shrugged off that she had deleted thousands of tweets.

Winbush will replace Kathy Miller, who told The Guardian earlier this week that there was no racism before President Barack Obama and that the challenges faced by African-Americans in the United States are their own fault.

This story has been updated to include a new tweet Winbush posted on Thursday.

The Huffington Post is documenting the rising wave of anti-Muslim bigotry and violence in America. Take a stand against hate.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.
