'Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark' Trailer: Katie Holmes In Guillermo Del Toro-Produced Remake (VIDEO)

The reviews for Katie Holmes' most recent projects, the controversial miniseries "The Kennedys" and Sundance-booed "The Son of No One," have been downright scary. Now, she's hoping to make audiences shriek in an entirely different -- and much more welcomed -- way.

Holmes stars in the big screen remake of "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark," a Troy Nixey-directed horror film produced by acclaimed "Pan's Labyrinth" filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. Holmes plays Kim, girlfriend to Guy Pearce and surrogate mother to his daughter Sally (played by Bailee Madison), who, upon moving to a new, creepy mansion, begins to hear horrific noises coming from the basement.

A remake of the 1973 TV movie, the film is highly anticipated by fans of del Toro, the special effects and horror wizard from Spain. It's a solid choice for Holmes, too, who has suffered from rough goes in highly unsuccessful films of late.

Her next role is lighter fare; in "Responsible Adults," she'll play a woman dating a younger man (played by Chace Crawford) whom, it turns out, she used to babysit.
