Hidden Gems in Popular Destinations
Everyone wants to check places like France and Spain off their bucket list, but not everyone is willing to battle hoards of tourists in the process. Head to one of these destinations for an authentic dose of the country’s offering without the sky-high prices and thick crowds.
Reims, France
If standing in line for an hour to get into the Notre Dame de Paris is not your cup of tea, head to Reims instead. This small city is home to the Notre Dame de Reims: a Gothic Cathedral that’s similar in style to the one in Paris, but larger and more ornate. Notre Dame de Reims was the site of the coronation ceremonies of the French Monarchs. You’ll feel like royalty too as the lack of tourists here will make you feel like you’re on a private visit. Reims is a short 2-hour train ride northeast of Paris.
East Cape, New Zealand
You can fight fellow tourists for a camping spot in New Zealand’s National Parks, or you can fight back your tears at the sight of pristine beauty along New Zealand’s East Cape. Fill your days with deserted beaches, dramatic coastal vistas, and the easternmost point in the southern hemisphere where you can be the first person to welcome the sun. If you get lonely, make friends with native birds, adorable seals, and goofy-looking cows.
Zaragoza, Spain
You have to book weeks in advance for a chance to see the Al Hambra Palace in Granada, Spain. In Zaragoza, you can saunter into the Royal Palace mid day and still have the place to yourself. This small town just southwest of Barcelona is home to many architectural gems from Spain’s Moorish era. The buildings were built in the Mudejar style, which combines elements of Islamic and Spanish architecture.
County Donegal, Ireland
You can bump elbows with fellow tourists on the Kerry Way, or you could head to County Donegal where there won’t be any crowds of tourists, or even a trail! Hiking in Glenveagh National Park feels like true freedom because you can wander around in the lush bog land in any direction you choose. Summit Mount Errigal, the tallest peak in County Donegal and you’ll be greeted with uninterrupted views of the surrounding pristine landscape.
